Fable: The Journey Press Roundup

Last week a group of journalists, from all over the world, paid a visit to the Lionhead Studios offices in sunny England.  Apart from chatting to Mark Webley and Gary Carr about Lionhead’s future plans, they also sat down and played our latest game, Fable: The Journey.

Here is a little round-up of the day and their experiences with the game:

IGN.com – “It Just Works”

“Moreover, a focus on magic allows for some interesting design choices, such as after-touch that can be applied to spells in order to fling electrical bolts high into the air before bringing them crashing down on hapless foes with downward swipe, which is useful for flushing enemies out of cover or for bending spells around environmental obstacles.” Read more…

DigitalSpy.co.uk – “a compelling Kinect experience”

“The physical nature of the magic system coupled with the first-person viewpoint adds a level of immersion not previously possible in past releases. Casting spells is enormously enjoyable and highly intuitive, albeit slightly basic during the early stages.

With new spells, higher levels and voice activation still to come, the complexity of the system is likely to grow. Judging by what we’ve seen so far, this is a journey we look forward to taking.” Read more…

OXM.co.uk – “Lionhead’s Kinect spin-off does Fable justice”

“Here, it genuinely feels like you’re a lone adventurer, winding your way through the fastness. The Journey is off to a very good start.”

“The Journey’s long term interest will probably hinge on the scope of its magic upgrades tree, which promises to transform both what spells do and how you cast them. Fireballs will become cluster bombs, bursting to shrapnel with a well-timed high five, and more expansive gestures will produce fatter energy balls. You’ll be able to hurl magic from the wagon, too, blasting winged demons and patching your horse’s wounds on the fly.” Read more…

Eurogamer.net – Kinect’s Journey

“But if you’re the average Eurogamer reader, you probably don’t want to play it – or think you don’t.”

“Lionhead’s commitment to those causes in Fable: The Journey – especially in establishing a solid framework for seated play, and in expanding the horizons of Kinect game production – is both substantial and impressive.” Read more…

DailyMail.co.uk – “I felt like Gandalf on acid – hurling spells all over the shop.”

“The next step of the hands-on experience involved some very cool spell-casting. When met by some nasty looking critters I had the option of dodging the attack by moving side to side.” Read more…

GameSpot – “there’s an unmistakable Fable flavour”

“Thankfully, this “nine- or ten-hour” all-Kinect game is played sitting, with the horse-drawn sequences controlled by tugging left or right on the reigns, cracking both to accelerate, or pulling them up and back to halt. The on-foot action means using each hand to cast spells that include a fireball, a force push, and a blade-summoning number Fable fans will recognise from previous instalments.” Read more…

I, like many others, was skeptical about this game, and still am, however it’s great to hear how fun it is to play and I am now sure this will be one of the few great Kinect experiences, if nothing else. I’m Interested.

In before “Lionhead what have you done!?! kiddie developer kinect sucks” comments

I like what they have said it makes me want to play it but I just hope that you can play it with a controller too because I don’t like the Kinect and I’m not going to go out and buy one just for this game.

    • jacob payne

i very seriously doubt they will add a  controller feature

What’s great about this game in my opinion is that it is built for Kinect. It would be pointless to port it, because there are things which you wouldn’t be able to do with a controller enjoyably, from what I read.
I’m just glad my little brother bought a Kinect when it came out because yea, I wouldn’t have bought one, but I really want to play this game.

Indeed. This game offers features never seen in any game before (at least it’s supposed to offer such features). I know some people don’t like kinect or maybe do like the game / kinect but are not willing to pay that much just for a single game, but the good part about this game are the features that cannot be reached using a controller. Hope it really is that good. Also I’ve read that dutch review, and thank god for good motion detection and not having (that much) auto-aim on spells (kind of surprised me, the good way). Think it will be fun!

  • Raven72

I’m really looking forward to playing this game. But first I have to finish Fable Heroes. ;)

knew it would end up amazing

  • Tim Manders

I have to say this is quite remarkable. I always liked kinect and Fable (though I never liked any kinect game so far), and after a what can be called terrible start for this game, and with the press not actually believing everything Peter said or liking Fable 3 in overall, it seems that they were really quite impressed with this game. Hope to see some more good stuff on E3 soon (right :o )! Well done Lionhead!

Great to see all these positive impressions for Fable: The Journey.  Go team!

  • AwesomeReaver

Gotta say, when I first saw (about a year ago) that there would be a new fable game, I was really excited. But then I saw that it was for the kinect… And that’s where I lost my excitment. I thought:
“Aw shit! They’re actually making Fable for kinect?”

although one part of me thought “Hey, I know that this idead sounds bad, but hey it might be good. Don’t pre-judge a game!” Even though, I was still very concerned about this whole project.

Then I got a little impressed when you showed it off a few months ago. “Ok, this might not be a bad idea after all. Looks kinda fun…” I thought.

And now I’m just more satisfied…  I’m not all in on Fable: The journey just yet… But I’m almost ceratain I’ll buy it. I have to get a kinect first though, so we’ll see. Of course, E3 is comming up, so I’ll be happy to see more there. LionHead… You rock! I don’t care what some people are saying about Fable, I think all the games (1, 2 and 3) are all awesome. Sure, each have it’s own problems here and there, but they were all awesome, and I’m looking forward to see what comes after The Journey (Fable 4?)…

  • Anthony Marriott

not.. a huge fan of this whole journey thing but staying positive i will say its looking incredible and has restored my faith in the future of the fable series – well done team! the graphics engine is pretty sweet and i’m really hoping this time contributes to Fable 4s production.. and now it really does just ahve me itching for Fable 4 news..
